About New Yorker Type Classic and Pro Font Free Download

In 1985, I was one of the first to try my hand at designing a typeface inspired by the iconic New Yorker magazine. I didn’t scan any of the letters – I simply looked at the type and redrew it all by hand. It was only later that I discovered there were several similar typefaces during that period – Rea Irvin’s design for the New Yorker was just one of.

Them, and quite possibly the best. Over the next few years, I worked to repair some of the mistakes I had made in the original design. Then, as 2020 approached, I completely refurbished the font, adding a set of swash initials, cyrillic and greek glyphs.

And numerous ligatures. Now with 1075 glyphs, it’s ready for most latin writing systems – with two versions – Classic with rounded corners and Pro with a more contemporary look. This is my way of honoring Rea Irvin, a great type- and magazine-designer.

– Gert Wiescher.
